What is Freedom Heroes?

There are currently up to 20,000 children living on the streets of Kampala, Uganda. Freedom Heroes takes these children on a journey off the streets and back into family.

Freedom Heroes is a ministry of Freedom Church (UK Registered CIO No. 1161926. Uganda Registered NGO No. 9898).

Freedom Heroes runs a Street School, where we educate children and provide practical care include food, clothing and medical support. Here our team of Social Workers and Support Staff get to know the boys, and assess their needs.

When the boys are ready to take a next step in the direction of home, we transition them through our 'Heroes Home' where our team helps boys to recover from life on the streets, build a stronger connection with their family and settle into full-time education.

All of this work aims to ensure successful, sustainable resettlement with family.  We also work with partner organisations who will step in where we are not able to help (eg, limited capacity in our home, specialist needs (HIV/AIDS).

How many boys are in the Heroes program?

Since the vision for Heroes is to take boys off of the streets on a journey home, we are constantly resettling boys back to their homes and inviting new boys into the program. Our current capacity in the Heroes Home is 13 and we average another 17 in vocational/boarding school. With your support, we hope to grow these numbers to be able to take even more boys on this journey.

What ages are the boys in Heroes?

Boys in Heroes can range from 12-18 (Heroes House) and 18-21 (Vocational/Boarding school).

Why are there no girls in Heroes?

Currently, our facilities at the Heroes Home are not conducive for having both boys and girls in the same compound so we are only able to have either boys or girls. In Kampala, where our weekly outreach is based, the majority of those on the streets are boys so we have chosen to focus our efforts on reaching and resettling those boys.

Why do you offer sponsorship?

A: We offer sponsorship as a means to 1) give people an opportunity to be a part of our Heroes’ stories and 2) support our Heroes in a tangible way.

How does sponsorship work?

A: When you choose to join in a journey through sponsorship you will enter your payment information and select the type of support you would like to provide (clothing, education, food, housing, all). Once completed, you will be charged monthly for the amount you have selected. If at any point your ability to give changes or you have any questions, please contact us so we can help you and accommodate any needs, changes, etc. that you may need to make.

How long is sponsorship for?

A: When you commit to sponsoring one of our Heroes, we ask that you commit to sponsorship for one year (12 months). As 12 months of sponsorship approaches, we will extend an opportunity to continue, change, or close your sponsorship support. Since our mission is to resettle our Heroes, at any point during sponsorship your boy(s) may be resettled and no longer in need of financial support. If this happens we will communicate this information to you and notify you of additional sponsorship opportunities or projects.

What does sponsorship cover?

Sponsorship covers the day to day costs of physical needs that our boys have (clothing, food, etc.) as well as the administrative costs that come with providing housing (utilities, maintenance, etc.).

What are sponsorship “shares”?

Sponsorship “shares" refer to the representative costs for each boy in the Heroes Program. Each boy needs five shares to be fully sponsored; each share is $25.00 per month so the total cost of sponsoring one boy fully per month is $125.00 ($25x5). You can see which shares are available for support under their profile pictures.

Where does my money go?

All money given to Freedom Heroes for sponsorship, including any Gift Aid reclaimed from the UK Government, goes to the actual costs of operating the Heroes Home and providing for all boys in our program. Sponsorship shares are representative costs and will be applied across all areas of need to ensure adequate funding for all boys equally. No percentage of the gift is retained by Freedom Church.

Do I have to sponsor only one boy, or can I sponsor multiple boys?

You can sponsor as many boys as you are financially able and willing! With sponsorship shares, you can choose to sponsor 1 share for multiple boys, all shares for 1 boy, or even all shares for multiple boys. If you have any questions, please contact us so we can help.

I am having a difficult time choosing a boy to sponsor; can I just give a general or one-time gift?

If you are unable to select one boy to sponsor, you can certainly make a one-time or recurring general donation by clicking the Donate link at the top of the sponsorship page.

Are my contributions tax deductible?

If I sponsor a boy, how will I know how he's doing?

You are always welcome to ask for any updates or information by sending us an email, but we will also send periodic emails providing updates for all donors with general information about things at the home as well as personalized updates for the boys whom you are sponsoring.

I would like to contact the boy I am sponsoring, send him a birthday present, Christmas gift, etc. - How do I do that?

Just send us an email and we will do all that we can to accommodate any requests and let you know what is possible and appropriate. Bear in mind that the logistics network in East Africa can be quite limited so we appreciate your understanding if we are unable to accommodate your request.

I would like to come visit my boy; is that possible?

We would absolutely love for you to come and visit your boy(s) as many times as possible! The best way to do this is to sign up to come on a missions trip with Newspring Church if you are in the U.S. or send us an email.

I received a notice that my sponsorship has ended; what does that mean?

Since our mission is to resettle our Heroes, at any point during sponsorship your boy(s) may be resettled and no longer in need of financial support. If this happens we will communicate this information to you and notify you of additional sponsorship opportunities or projects.

Beyond sponsorship, are there any other ways I can help support Heroes?

A: In addition to financial support, we always encourage and appreciate your support in prayer. To keep up to date on what is happening with Heroes and how you can pray, please visit our Facebook Page (@FreedomHeroesCC) and follow us on Instagram (@FreedomHeroesCC).
